Sangsun BAE (배상순) Artist Biography

[gallery submission]

Artist Statement

My work is an ongoing exploration of the types of connections that exist between individuals, connections capable of holding relationships, communities and whole societies together, but which are equally susceptible of becoming self-entangled, frayed or of unravelling entirely. From the simple motifs of strings, ropes and knots, I create a diverse array of objects and images that embody the complex network of psychological links and attachments that can develop over a lifetime, or accumulate over generations. In some cases, these ideas manifest themselves as bold charcoal drawings of dark, tense knots on stark, white canvas or, at the other extreme, as profound voids of darkness surrounded by thousands upon thousands of white, hair- like lines, each a single brush stroke meditatively placed upon taut, black velvet.
